UAW Members Fight Budget Cuts
Ten UAW members
left our union hall in the early hours of May 9 for Austin. They joined the
Texas State Employees Union (TSEU) and other concerned Texans from across the
state in protesting the vicious budget cuts proposed in the State Legislature.
Brother Dick Kelp (wearing suit) was already in Austin on behalf of UAW-CAP. Over
2,000 people marched, rallied, and lobbied at the State Capitol that day.
A steady stream
of unionists and representatives of grass-roots organizations has been
protesting the planned legislation. Even the anti-union Dallas Morning News has publicly opposed the entire budget proposal
and the legislature’s plans for radical redistricting to remove labor-friendly
state and national political leaders from office. The battle is expected to
continue into the summer.
