SCHOLARSHIP APPLICANT RULES

ACADEMIC YEARSponsors: United Aerospace Workers Local 848 and the James Earl Wavrusa Scholarship Fund
Description: The United Aerospace Workers Local 848 Scholarship Committee overseas this program. Each scholarship is in the amount of $500 for one 12-month period which shall cover the fall and spring semesters (terms/portion) of the junior or senior year. Should the college or university be on a schedule other than semester, the award will be incrementally adjusted to the academic year of that school. A minimum of one scholarship is available for a qualified applicant per year. The number of scholarships awarded each year, (not to exceed three), shall be determined annually by the current Local 848 Executive Board.
Eligibility: College/University students who will be completing the sophomore (60 hours) or junior year requirements and entering their junior or senior year in the fall semester (term) of the year application is submitted. Students, who are the son, daughter, stepson, stepdaughter, grandson, or granddaughter of an active or retired Local 848 member, are eligible to compete for the scholarship.
To qualify, recipient must have a minimum grade point average of a 2.75 on a 4.0 scale and maintain a 2.75 or better grade point average during the first semester to justify second semester funding. The semester load must be at least 12 college credit hours to be eligible (unless in last semester of degree plan).
Consideration will be given to academic standing, school activities, employment and community involvement during their college/university career.
In the event a successful applicant is unable to continue his/her academic school year because of health or injury, any uncommitted funds will be held for that person for 12 months.
If the applicant discontinues his/her academic education for any other reason, the uncommitted portion will be returned to the Scholarship Fund.

With the completed application, provide an official transcript and the latest cumulative grade report from the applicant’s most recently completed semester, a 300 word personal essay describing applicant’s career interests and goals, and two letters of reference from non-relatives, one from a college/university faculty member in the applicant’s field of study and one from a person well acquainted with applicant.
Submit the application and required documents to the following address and they will be forwarded to the scholarship chairperson.

A selection committee, which includes representatives from UAW Local 848 worksites will review applications and select the winner/s using predetermined criteria. To assure objectivity in reviewing the applications, the scholarship chairperson shall/may remove all identifiers (except site) from the applications and supporting documents. All members of the selection committee will review all applications and documents and assign a score to each applicant. The scores of the committee will be compiled to determine the winner.

Members with questions regarding the program may contact the scholarship chairman, James Ducker, at 972-946-4776. Winners will be notified in late June, with checks issued by mid-August, to the student (for proper expenditure on his/her behalf), unless specific circumstances warrant otherwise.
Scholarship winners are responsible for notifying their college’s Financial Aid Office concerning this award.
