Make Plans for Civil Rights
Local 848's Civil Rights Committee met on the afternoon
of November 17 to make far-reaching plans. The first order of business was to
plan to march on the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Last year, we joined
with other UAW locals in the Dallas march, which is the largest celebration
in North Texas. Chairperson Johnnie Durham (pictured) will check with other
UAW locals about our plans for this January. It may be even bigger than usual,
because the events are ordinarily planned on the Saturday closest to the actual
birthday on January 15. In 2005, January 15 is a Saturday!
The next important event will be our local's celebration of Black History Month. An event is planned for our union hall at 3 PM on February 20, right after the regular union meeting. Several activists took responsibility to contact prize speakers for the event. Before the week was out, we already had a positive response from syndicated radio talk show host Tunde Obazee.
The Committee meets every month. All members are encouraged to participate. The UAW would never have succeeded had it not strongly advocated equal rights for all.
