UAW Demands Fair Gas Prices
Local 848 active and retired members joined the protest at Congressman Joe Barton's Southwest Arlington office on August 31. They were demanding lower gasoline prices and no privatization of Social Security. Barton is on record as favoring privatization, and he recently pushed a major energy bill through Congress. Gasoline consumers saw no relief, and prices continued to soar, even before the hurricane disaster.
The Texas Community Action Program (CAP) Council organized the event as requested by UAW Region 5 Director Jim Wells. On the same day, other militant protests took place throughout the 17-state UAW Region 5.
The protesters had a good time, especially because most of the cars and trucks that went by
indicated
that they were on our side.
Amanda Dubberke had a hand-made sign that encouraged them to honk their horns, and many of them responded. Of more than 100 protestors, about 90 were from UAW, but we had support from other unions and a Fort Worth group named "Code Pink."
At the end of the protest, Attorney Art Bender, Chairman of the Tarrant County Democrats, addressed the group.

Harrold Zoch, James Splawn, and Jeff Benge were among those from Local 848 who came out. For more photos, click here
