Union Members Get Busy!

At the February 15 membership meeting, Committeeman Pete Jimenez thanked the many Local 848 members who had pitched in to help the family bereaved by the death of Brother Darin Sutton. On February 28, Local 848’s Civil Rights Committee honored Black History Month with an evening of music and discussion. This is the second year for the event, and it continues to improve. The group had dinner and a professional band.

Even while early voting for the primary elections was running, North Texas unionists were being asked to join in a large number of hard-hitting public events. A rally for health care was scheduled for March 4 from 11:30 to noon at One Bell Plaza in downtown Dallas. The address is 202 Akard.

That same afternoon at 3, UAW Local 129 sought help with a picket line at Alliance Airport. Start at 3:30 PM  at 125 Intermodal. The next day, March 5, the UNITE! union asked people to rally at UT Southwestern, Zale Lipshy, next to Parkland Hospital at 5303 Harry Hines Boulevard. They begin at 4 PM to protest the use of sweatshop labor in laundries where management is trying to keep the union out.

On March 6 at 10 AM, “United Voices for Immigrants” will meet at 2639 Walnut Hill Lane #203 to plan out ways to get more Latinos to vote. March 12 is the tentative date for the second organizational meeting for the National Interreligious Committee for Worker Justice. On March 13, a barbecue at our hall for union-endorsed candidates is being planned by members.
