Civil Rights Committee Meets

Local 848’s Civil
Rights Committee is proud to represent minority interests within the local.
They consult with members of the Grievance Procedure whenever a special problem
comes up.
Johnnie Haggerty
chairs the committee. They meet on the Wednesday before the local union
membership meeting.
Special events that they participate include “Juneteenth,” Martin
Luther King’s birthday, and Cesar Chavez’ birthday.
At the November 12
meeting, the group voted to build a contingent in the Dallas Martin Luther
King, Jr, parade in mid-January.
A special concern of all UAW civil rights committees
is to make sure that everybody is registered to vote. In recent U.S. history,
many minorities or people who did not speak English as their first language
found it very difficult to get the right to vote. Unions fought hard for our
democracy.
