The United Auto Workers and other Texas unions are continuing our efforts to get the Texas Legislature to act responsibly. Teachers from all over the state went to the capitol on March 14 to try to stop the legislature from passing a school finance bill that would do little to help. They also wanted to stop a new tax bill that would benefit 20% of the richest Texans, those who make over $100,000/year, and hurt everybody else.
Politicians had claimed that House Bill #2 would give all teachers a $3,000/year raise, but leaders of the American Federation of Teachers said it was a "phoney." House Bill#3, which would finance HB#2 and the rest of the state's expenditures, was still being discussed in the Texas House. The Senate had acted on neither.
