Retiree leaders from across Region 5 gathered in Lake Ozark, Missouri, for training May 4-5. They began with a rousing speech from Region 5 Director Jim Wells. Wells encouraged action of all kind as he described a worsening situation for American working people and, especially, for seniors. Most of his speech may be heard on www.knon.org on Wednesday, May 11.
He said that tax cuts for rich people and a war for the benefit of oil companies were taking all the money that should be going to make life better in America. The news media has been whipped in line. Unions are under severe attack. Wells and Education Rep JD Gray held question and answer sessions with the retirees, who proved to be very knowledgeable about the problems and very creative in proposing solutions. There were a lot of suggestions for rallies, pickets, and marches. Brother Wells indicated that he was open to every option.
Wells said that everybody should be speaking out: "If we don’t speak the
truth, this country is going to continue to go straight down."
Although the issues were often complicated, the solutions were not. Most of the retirees called for increased political activity in one form or another. As for Social Security, one very wise woman put it bluntly: "Remove the cap on Social Security taxes and that will take care of the whole problem!"
