A unanimous vote of Local 848’s Civil Rights Committee committed us to march for the ideas of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, at the Dallas Parade in mid-January. Even though union members have been protected, the civil rights situation in America is going downhill at an accelerating pace.

Speakers at a big civil rights meeting at the Westin Hotel in Dallas on October 25 detailed the nosedive that civil rights has taken since the early 1980’s. They pointed out that the U.S. Patriot Act and new laws being proposed are the worst of a large set of bad developments. Most of the speakers agreed with the solution proposed by Martin Luther King, III: “We must mobilize everybody everywhere to participate in the upcoming elections.  It really is about changing public policy, having a policy that acknowledges the rights of the people.  We have to go through our communities and register as many people as we can!”
