The big crowd that turned out for Local 848's May 15 meeting got an up-close look at democracy in action. Most of the meeting was taken up with nominations for office with President Giesecke asking the required three times, "Are there any more nominations?" Most of the candidates had already filled in nomination forms, but a few were nominated from the floor.
When the members realized that Jeff Benge was the only nominee for 2nd Vice President, they broke out in applause. As it became clear that others would be elected by acclamation, applause grew. Eventually, the members started applauding after every set of nominations. It was a cheery group.

These nominees had no opponents
Earlier, the membership had approved a long list of new members. Brenda Newman
and Gabriel Estrada came to be sworn in, which set off a lot of applause and
positive feelings. As always, there were reports from the three grievance committees
and from other committees. There were "good and welfare" statements
and a drawing, but the upcoming democratic elections were the main concern.
