Faith-Based Organizations Form
Alliances with Unions
On February 9, Dallas union activists met with church people at the
Dallas Peace Center. State Representative Lon Burnam (pictured in sports coat
below) organized the meeting with special speaker Kim Bobo (sitting right below
him in green blouse). Bob is the National Director of the National
Interreligious Committee for Worker Justice (NICWJ).
Methodist, Baptist, and Catholic church activists joined in.
Bob did not let the meeting linger long on the general benefits of
alliances for worker justice. She moved directly into the practicalities of
helping the Teamsters organizer, Darrel Endicott (seated at left below) with a
practical organizing drive that was already underway. She asked him if his
activity would benefit from a delegation of ministers to the bosses. Endicott
saw the benefit right away and began cooperating on the project! Bobo pointed
out that there are a great many ways that church people would be happy to help
with organizing drives, contract negotiations, and job actions.
