Retirees To Rally
The UAW Area Retirees meeting was held, on the 4th
Thursday, May 25, at UAW 276 hall. Representatives shared information on events
and needs in their respective locals.
Most of the discussion was on politics. The retirees are solidly behind
a “Rally for Retiree Benefits” to be held 9:30 - 11 AM on Tuesday, June 29 at
the IBEW (Electricians) 20 Union Hall at 7940 Northaven in Dallas. They will
have questions and answers with U.S.
Congressman Martin Frost about new
threats to our Social Security, Medicaid, pension plans, and affordable
prescription drugs. They intend to make plans to stand up for their rights and
the rights of those who haven’t retired yet.
UAW retirees are donating to the UAW Region 5 political program
through their own raffle ticket program. At Local 276, retirees build yard signs for labor-endorsed candidates by the
tens of thousands. Dozens of UAW volunteers “network” with thousands of
retirees by telephone to make sure the
union’s political message reaches all.

Even though outsourcing and automation have caused a slow but steady decrease in the union
share of the American workforce, our political clout has steadily increased as more and more union
families register and vote with their unions.
