UAW Members Study Elections
Local
848 active and retired members are studying politics carefully as more and more
wages, rights, and benefits are threatened.
Many
workers have lost their pensions. There are a number of plans floating that
would diminish or remove overtime pay. The right to organize and fight for a
better life is under siege more than in any period of our lifetimes.
Local 848’s retirees often have opportunities to improve their political understanding from speakers and discussions at their monthly luncheons. When the September 13 Texas elections came near, several retirees swung into action. On the first day of early voting, hundreds of UAW retirees were being called.
UAW
leaders were reaching out to the active members in August through posters and
leaflets. The UAW International asked all unions to give out information on
the announced presidential candidates and to conduct informal “straw polls”
at each local.
Brother John Garcia was one of the first to cast a carefully-studied vote at our hall.
